Trident Racing Istanbul qualifying report

Istanbul Park circuit

The long wait is finally over for the 2011 GP2 Main Series, as the top feeder championship for Formula 1 went underway today at the Istanbul raceway in Turkey. Trident Racing fielded its two regular racers, Italian-Monégasque Stefano Coletti and Venezuelan Rodolfo Gonzalez.

The Turkish round started with the running of practice, marred by a thick rainfall, and was followed by qualifying, when the cars went on-track with slick tires. The session was red-flagged twice, bringing a lot of traffic back on-track when green lights came out. The qualifications ended up being really fragmented, and that was the main reason why Coletti couldn't score more than 15th place and Gonzalez ended up in 26th.

The first race of the weekend, scheduled to run on a 32-lap distance, will take-off tomorrow at 15:40. The 23-lap Race 2 will start on Sunday at 11:35 (all times local, GMT+3). The 2011 GP2 Series will benefit from a wide international TV coverage. In Italy, national network RAI will broadcast all this season's races live.

Stefano Coletti, 15. (1:35.182)
“Traffic proved a really big issue today. The best performing tires give just one lap in perfect conditions, and when you find a slower car in front you're done. I hope to make a good start tomorrow, and start climbing back like I already did in the Asia Series. The car was running very smoothly, and that just increases our regret for not having achieved what we deserved...”

Rodolfo Gonzalez, 26th (1:36.187)
“What should i say? In qualifying I turned just one flying lap in 30 minutes. I was stopped twice by the red flags and each time I started one I found some slowing cars in front or yellow flags exposed for some off-track exits. It's been a really unfortunate day for me.”
