Trident Racing Elated With Budapest GP2 Win In Race 2

Story Highlights

  • 2nd GP2 victory for Coletti
  • Team gambled on tire choice
  • Gonzalez places 9th

Trident Racing cruised to a sensational win on race 2 of the GP2 Main Series round held this weekend at the Hungaroring. After having started way down the order in 21st, Stefano Coletti put together a massive recovery en-route to a stunning victory. Strategy proved key in today's result: despite the wet conditions due to rain before the start, he opted to take-off on slicks, and while he struggled to keep control in the opening stages, the circuit dried out progressively, and by the time the rain started to fall again he was holding a comfortable lead. At that point, the team opted for a change to rain rubber in the best posssible moment available, handing Coletti the perfect chance to round out the weekend in perfect style.

Like happened for all the other drivers, Rodolfo Gonzalez started on rain tires, so a second tire change was necessary. Despite a spin, he managed to end up in a really positive 9th place.

The GP2 calendar will now allow teams and driver to take a little break. Spa-Francorchamps will be hosting the penultimate round of the season on the next 26th of August.

Stefano Coletti (1st)
“This morning I opened up my window and when I saw the rain falling I thought <<If it's not an hurricane I'm definitely gonna take-off on slicks, it's the only chance to get some spots back>>. And right at the start, I decided to stick with that idea, despite there were some wet patches and slicks were quite a risk. In the first few laps it's been a nightmare because it was so slippery and I even ended up spinning. Then the situation improved dramatically and I found myself lapping faster than anybody else. I even moved from 14th to 6th in one lap! We continued to recover up to the lead, and when we went to rain tires I felt that the situation was pretty much under control. I think it's been a great day for me and the team. Definitely a win to remember!"

Rodolfo Gonzalez (9th)
"I believe that today I could have definitely been on the podium together with Stefano. I started with rain tires and I proved quite fast in the first few laps. Unfortunately, our move to slicks came a little too early and I really struggled. I lost some more spots as I spun while battling with Aleshin, but I made up when we returned to wets. It's a bit of a pity because today we had all what it takes to be among the other major contenders..."
