The second round of the 2012 GP2 Series went on with its first race of the weekend today at Al Sakhir Circuit, Bahrain. Trident Racing ended the day by scoring the 11th position with Stéphane Richelmi, who was followed by team-mate Julian Leal.

Despite he was at his debut at the Bahrain circuit, Richelmi immediately found a good feeling with the track and car and took 6th at the end of qualifying. The Monaco-based racer wasn't off to a really good start, so the team elected to go for an early stop. The strategy enabled him to recover but, as the tires started to wear out in the final part of the race, he couldn't clinch a top-10 position.

Leal, who started off from 19th place, had a tough job to do in the first few laps due to brake issues. He eventually put together a great pace, recovering on several cars and ending up in the slipstream of his team-mate.

In the final race of the weekend in Bahrain, the two Trident Racing drivers will take-off from the 6th row on the grid. The 23-lap long race is set to take-off at 10:35 local time (9:35 Italian time) with a wide TV coverage.

Stéphane Richelmi

“I wasted the sixth place I got in qualifying with a start which I won't remember as one of my best ones. In addition to losing a lot of positions,I suffered from traction issues, and so we opted for an early stop. With the fresh tires the situation changed dramatically and I kept a great pace. I knew that the last laps would have been though due to the tire wear, and that's what happened. I'm sorry not to have ended up into the points zone because I think the team and I would have deserved it".

Julian Leal

"I was off to a great start, but at the first corner I didn't want to take risks due to the chaos situation out front. In the first few laps I lost some spots because of brake issues that forced me to early braking points, but then everything was sorted out. After the pit-stop I keept a great pace and I recovered several positions up to 12th. I think that our pace has been really good and we just need to optimize the car's handling in qualifying in order to score some great results."
