Barcelona Test - Day 2
Barcelona GP2 Final Test Day
Team AirAsia had another very positive and productive test at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona today, concluding the preseason testing ahead of the first race next month at the top of the time sheets!
Davide Valsecchi & Luiz Razia set the pace early in the early session as the quickest duo on track for most of the morning. As the afternoon session came to a close Team AirAsia finished with both cars in the top five, Davide quickest, Luiz fifth.
New to the GP2 Paddock, this is a fantastic start to the team who are looking forward to the opening round in Istanbul in two weeks time.
Phill Spencer Team Manager "I am really pleased with how our two days of testing has gone! We have been at the top of timesheets both days, have tested a lot of different things and learnt a great deal. Both drivers are very happy and are working well together and sharing information. The car and crew look sharp so all in all I am very pleased, and this stands us in good stead and in a confident frame of mind going into Istanbul in two weeks time. "
Davide Valsecchi (Total laps; 73 Best time; 1:29.669) "Today has been incredible! The car was good from the very beginning and strong enough to stay in the top five over the course of the two days, so I am very happy. I feel confident we are well prepared for Istanbul and everyone in the team is looking forward to racing next month. You often race where you qualify in GP2 so I will be looking to qualify well and get a good start. I really like the Turkish circuit so I am feeling confident and looking forward to the season ahead."
Luiz Razia (Total laps; 79 Best time; 1:29.970)"We had two new sets of tyres to use this morning and out on the track it was incredibly close. It is obviously a very different situation to the race conditions but it was good to see our car is competitive and can run between P1-P8. We have a lot of data to look at for the season ahead, but as it stands we are in a good position so I will keep my head clear and looking ahead to Istanbul. We now have 10 days off to train and to prepare for the opening round - Bring it on!"
Chief Engineer Humphrey Corbett "I am very happy with how things have gone this week. We completed all our programs and we have a lot data to go through but we have already learnt a lot. We have had no issues with the car. The drivers are happy and have conducted themselves very well - I can't fault them one single bit. This is the first time we have used the hard compound tyres so we are still getting to used to the characteristics of that set and they are quite different to the medium compound. A lot of what we have tested here this week is applicable to the Istanbul circuit so I think we are in good stead for the race in a couple of weeks time. We have also been practicing our pitstops which have been very good, so overall I am very pleased."
