Luca Filippi On The Podium
Luca Filippi had a fantastic race today around the streets to finish on the podium from 11th on the grid, having been the fastest driver on track for much of the race. Fairuz was running in P12 with a few laps to go, even after a drive through penalty for jumping the start, but his car stopped on the final lap whilst challenging for 11th position. He was still classified in the results in P15.
After Sam Bird stalled on the grid, the whole field miraculously overcame this obstacle and made it cleanly through the first corner. Luca settled in behind Johnny Cecotto for the first part of the race and cleverly preserved his tyres for later on and when the opportunity of clean air was presented, Luca showed tremendous speed by consistently setting fastest laps. Even though there was a slight pit stop glitch, this allowed Luca to jump into P3 after his stop and this is where he finished. Fairuz’s race was less straightforward - having made an early stop to get some clean air, he was judged to have jumped the start and called in for a drive though penalty. His race was then pretty uneventful until the final lap, when his car stopped with a problem.
Fairuz Fauzy - P14
“The start was great but I had to lift, I rolled and stopped then went again but still a penalty. Our pace was really good but you can’t really over take here, I still made it up to P12 and challenging Mirocha then the car came to a stop with no alarm on the dashboard, so we need to check this. Still, I think that without the penalty we were looking good for P8 and pole tomorrow but I didn’t have the luckiest of days. Tomorrow will be different again with no pit stops, so I think we still have a chance of getting back into the points. I’d also like to say well done to Luca for his podium today.”
Luca Filippi - P3
“Today was a great day for us - I gave the team the first podium of the year, at last! We thought about the race management a lot before the race and the team and engineers really made the perfect strategy for me today. We knew we were so much faster than everybody and the key point for us was to find clean air in front of us, which is what we did. I think we were also faster than the cars in front at the end but it is just impossible to overtake here. Still, a podium is a very good result for us from where we started. ”
David Sears – Team Principal
“Luca Filippi drove an outstanding race today to make up for his mistake yesterday. He was evidently the fastest man on track today and he was only pipped to fastest lap by Valescchi who was in clean air all race. We kept him out late setting a number of fastest laps in a row, then we had a problem on the pit stop which perhaps could have been good enough for second.
Fairuz was stuck in the Monaco traffic early in the race, so we tried to get him out in clean air with an early stop. This could have worked out well but for a drive through penalty for jumping the start. He then had a problem on the last lap which caused the car to stop - something that we will look into on the data.”
