Fauzy Flies In Sprint Race
Fairuz Fauzy produced the drive of the race today, storming through to a 5th position finish from the 6th row on the grid. After a very good start Fairuz got himself into the top ten and set about picking off the cars in front one by one, by making some outstanding overtaking moves and managing his tyres well. It was clear that the Super Nova cars were consistently some of the fastest on track and Luca did his best to make up positions after yesterday’s disappointment. This progress was hindered at the start when Cecotto once again moved across and made contact with Luca, damaging his front wing in the process. Despite this Luca was much faster than the cars in front and he used this to make it up to 14th position at the end of the race. The Super Nova team now has its sights set on the next round of the GP2 Series in Barcelona and will go there full of confidence after the pace it has shown this weekend.
Fairuz Fauzy - P5
‘A good start today with us and the car was better today. We made some changes to the car for this race to help look after the tyres but I still think there is some room for improvement. The good thing about this weekend is that we have some points to bring home and my aim for the season is to consistently score points over the season, to put us up the ladder at the end of the season. I think the race today was fantastic and my car was one of the quickest out there, so I would like to thank the team for the job they have done. I think the next race in Barcelona can be very good for us but we need to qualify at the front to make the most of the pace we have. I also think that tyre management is more critical than ever in GP2, so this is another thing to work on. ’
Luca Filippi - P14
‘We knew we would be very fast today and I had a good start until we were hit by Cecotto again, damaging my front wing. Still I managed to get a lot of positions, then there was a messy situation where I tried to overtake a group of cars and I made a bit of mistake and got pushed to the outside, losing four or five positions with this, so then I lost a lot of time having to get past these guys again. It is a shame because I think that without this mistake we would have had a strong top ten finish. Anyway, I am very happy with the car an we can go to Barcelona with a lot of confidence.’
‘Fairuz Fauzy produced the best drive so far in his GP2 career by managing his tyres over the whole race distance and leaping from P12 to P5 at the end of the race. In fact, if a safety car had not come out five laps from the end of the race Fairuz would have actually finished on the podium, such was his speed advantage over the cars ahead of him. Luca Filippi unfortunately had Cecotto next to him on the grid who, not content with crashing into Luca’s car yesterday, managed to make contact with Luca’s front wing today off the line. However, Luca still managed to get up to fourteenth place at the flag.
Both drivers know that their cars are quick enough to win races and the whole Super Nova team looks forward to our next race in Barcelona in two weeks time.’
