The Rapax team and Pastor Maldonato increased their lead in the 2010 GP2 Main Series standings today, as the Venezuelan cruised to take his sixth straight feature race win at Spa-Francorchamps. In the 8th round of the season, Maldonado hit the lead thanks to a brilliant pit-stop (made on lap 9), that allowed him to move on Jerome D'Ambrosio.
Maldonado also extended his margin in points, allowing his team to do the same. While another triumph unfolded for him, team-mate Luiz Razia was struck once again by bad luck. After taking off from 20th, the Brazilian recovered well in the first part of the race, but his final result was compromised by a drive-trough for an alleged chicane cut.
Since Razia passed another car, but handed the spot back as prescribed by the rules, the team will check with race control the reasons behind the penalty assessed. Maldonado will start tomorrow's Race 2 in 7th, while Razia is set to move from row 8. The green flag is scheduled for 10:35 AM, over an 18-lap distance. Live TV coverage will be provided in Italy by National TV RAI 2.
Pastor Maldonado. "Today's one has been the toughest victory of the whole season. When I started feeling like I was close to win, the car's handling changed, all of a sudden, and I still had 7 laps to go. I started losing two seconds per lap, and D'Ambrosio passed. We don't know what happened, but we'll do some checks. Luckily enough, he had some problems too, and I cruised back to the lead through the checkered flag. This is the result of some great team work, with an incredibly fast pit-stop from pit entry, to the tire change and the exit. I really want to thank the guys for their awesome job"
Luiz Razia. "I did a good start, but right after the first corner I had to avoid a piece of debris, and lost positions in the process. After the Safety-Car neutralization the overall performance was good. Then, when I tried to pass Arabadzhiev, I slightly lost control and cut the chicane, and despite I let him pass again, I was given a Drive Trough. I really don't understand the penalty's motivation."
