LOPEZ 10TH AND FAUZY 13TH IN A BUSY RACE
Today's long race in the first ever GP2 event in Spa has been a busy moment for team managers and drivers with changing weather, accidents and safety cars. DAMS took a bet with changing weather conditions, as several GP2 front runners did, but the race facts and 4 safety car pulled Lopez and Fauzy to 10th & 13th position as they were running in 2nd and 5th place in the second half of the race.
Jose Maria Lopez : "The race circumstances did not help us and with all these safety cars we lost all the benefits of our strategy. In the beginning of the race there was a little bit of rain, but not heavy, some parts of the track were more wet and other ones were dry and the best was to keep dry tyres. I had a good start and I passed a few cars, when the 1st safety car came in some cars stopped for the mandatory pit stop, I stayed on the track with Kovalainen and Caroll. I was in the pace of Heikki and I managed to pass Caroll after another safety car. I was running 2nd, but we pushed as far as possible our mandatory pit stop, waiting for heavier rain, it did not come and we lost our bet."
Fairuz Fauzy : "On the start I passed 4 cars, I was then 13th and, as the weather was inconsistent, we decided to stay on track and wait for the rain when the safety car came in. My car had a 100% dry setup with low wing so it was more and more difficult to drive and with the light rain some cars with intermediate setup had an advantage. We were quite unlucky today, I think we could have a very good result."
