Race suspension leaves Clivio in 16th position
Clivio Piccione finished the suspended second race of the weekend in Spa in 16th position. Initially the race was delayed for one hour due to repairs on a safety barrier incurred in the previous race.
At 11.00am, the race got underway with a rolling start behind the safety car due to very difficult conditions with considerable water on the track. Clivio made a good start and managed to overtake Olivier Pla for 10th position on the first lap.
Clivio went on to challenge Lauda for P9 but was unable to overtake the Austrian due to poor visibility. Then on lap 4, the pair had a coming- together causing Clivio to spin before rejoining the action in 21st position.
The rain started to fall on lap 7, making conditions even more difficult for the drivers. Ernesto Viso was the first driver to succumb to the slippery track and went off on lap 10. Then Yoshimoto and Jani were involved in a crash leaving debris strewn across the track and the safety car was redeployed. The race was subsequently suspended on lap 11 and it was decided not to resume the action so the on-track positions at the time of the red flag determined the final standings.
"After the safety car start, I kept my position and on the back straight it was like a big white cloud of spray. I had to find a reference point for braking and managed to pass Pla. I then pulled up behind Lopez and Lauda for a couple of laps. I was a lot faster than Lauda but the conditions made it quite difficult to overtake. Then on lap 4, I went down the inside of turn 9 and Lauda turned into me so we touched and I spun. The car kept running so I was able to continue but I'd already lost a lot of time. I rejoined the action behind Yoshimoto but there was so much water spray by this point that it was almost impossible to judge where to brake on each corner so I just followed him for a couple of laps. Then the rain started to come down really hard. On the back straight, I really couldn't see anything. It wasn't just spray - it was solid rain and it was like driving into a white light. It stayed like this for two laps until the crashes which caused the race to be suspended.
It was really difficult and to be honest, pretty dangerous out there this morning. The conditions meant we couldn't even race properly today: it was a question of just trying to stay on track."
