Safety Car dominates race one in Spa as Clivio finishes 12th
Clivio Piccione crossed the finish line in 12Th position after an incident- filled first race which saw the Safety Car being deployed four times over the course of 26 laps. The outcome of the race was decided by pitstop strategy with the advantage going to those who took their pitstops early.
By the end of the first lap, Clivio had managed to pull up from 14th on the grid to 11th as he overtook Viso at the first corner and then Pla before the first Safety Car was deployed due to cars stalling on the grid. Soon after racing had resumed, the pace car made its second outing of the afternoon as Yoshimoto spun out of the race to trigger the first set of pitstops. With the Safety Car back in the pits, Clivio moved up to P7 behind Pla before passing the David Price Racing driver for 6th position.
Race leader Bruni caused the third Safety Car phase as he crashed out of the race leaving Clivio in 5th place. Soon afterwards, the rain started to fall on part of the track making conditions more difficult for the drivers. Undeterred, Clivio overtook Fauzy for P4 before the fourth and final Safety Car phase. Unfortunately, the team's decision to call Clivio in for his compulsory pitstop coincided with the Safety Car coming in and Clivio rejoined the action in 15th position.
From there to the end of the race, the rain started to fall more heavily and it became increasingly more challenging for the drivers. Clivio overtook Fauzy again as more cars fell victim to the conditions before crossing the line in 12th position.
"I got off well at the start and managed to pass Viso at the first corner and then Pla on the back straight. I bided my time in the first Safety Car phase but when we started racing again, Yoshimoto spun off and I lifted off to avoid him which let Fauzy and Pla slip past me - one on the left and one on the right. But the car felt good and I was able to push and overtake both of them again.
Then in the middle of the race, it started raining on part of the track and I was doing my best to push between the Safety Car coming in and out again several times. On the fourth time the pace car came out, it was raining a bit more so the team decided to call me in. Unfortunately, I came in at the same time as the Safety Car came in which is pretty much the worst point in the race to take a pitstop. I also had a problem with my pitstop as the car slipped off the front jack so that caused us to lose more time as well. When I went back out on wet tyres, it was raining on one part of the track but not all the way round but it got wetter towards the end of the race. It took me a couple of laps, but I managed to catch up with Fauzy again and then chased Olivier up until the end and crossed the line right behind him. At the end of the day, the car felt good in the wet but really it was a race about strategy. All the cars that did the later pitstop like me finished out of the points. The pitstop was just too late."
