Yet an other great recovery drive from Javier Villa at today's GP2 feature race, finishing 13th after starting from the 20th spot on the grid.
Javi's recovery could have been even better if he hadn't suffered from quite a lot of understeer in his Dallara, a problem that couldn't be wholly fixed despite the setup changes made overnight following yesterday's qualifying. On a track were having a precise front-end is fundamental for driver's confidence entering the fast corners, understeer is probably the most damaging problem preventing fast lappery. Understeer doesn't allow the driver to closely follow other cars and the problem is exacerbated as the understeer is greatly increased due to the aerodynamic loss that is caused by the other car's slipstream.
Even though Javi's race was quite good, gaining places steadily from his position at the back of the grid and having good pace as is shown by his 7th fastest time at the track's first sector. This is the most demanding part of the track and is where the best drivers make up time getting the best lines trough the daunting succession of corners: Becketts, Maggots and Chapel leading to the Hangar Straight.
At the end of the race, Villa managed to finish 13th taking the chequered flag less than three seconds behind the group that was battling for tenth place. Tomorrow morning, starting from the middle of the grid, Villa's chances of fighting for points will be better even though it is the shorter sprint race which will mean he will have to really push hard from the word go. This is something he's perfectly capable of, especially if the team can fix those understeer problems that limited him today. This is the reason why the driver is feeling really optimistic regarding his chances tomorrow as today he felt quite comfortable driving at this difficult British track despite his car not handling as well as he would have liked.
Javier Villa's own words: "We had quite a lot of understeer right from the start and that limited us because on this track, with 99% fast corners, if your car understeers it is quite tough to closely follow other cars as you lose a lot. Despite this I wasn't that slow and I finished caching up the five cars in front of me so we are trying to fix the problem for tomorrow and then I think I can do better."
