Ho-Pin Tung spins at soaking wet Silverstone

Chinese racing driver Ho-Pin Tung did not succeed in turning the difficult circumstances at the Silverstone circuit into his favor. In Sunday's race he 'enjoyed' just like many of the Formula 1 matadors, the wet conditions of the track. In a heavy fight the young Chinese came a little too high on the kerbstones, he spun off and the engine stalled. He scored another 'DNF' behind his name. In Saturdays' race he finished 18th but Ho-Pin is sure that a smarter strategy could have given him a points finish.

Ho-Pin Tung explains right after the race: ' Qualification did not bring the intended results, mainly because I could not make use of the much quicker second set of tyres. There was simply no free lap left.' A 20th place on the starting grid was the result. Ho-Pin's starting talent is famous by now in the entire paddock. After the first lap in Saturdays race he was already 14th. 'But my tyres did not work well and a lost precious time. I asked the team to let me come in for fresh tyres but they kept me out too long. This was a strategic mistake. When I got new tyres finally I was immediately 2 seconds per lap quicker than prior to my pit stop. It is not difficult to imagine what would have been my result if I could have pitted for new tyres right after the sixth lap.'

In the second GP-2 race of this weekend, on Sunday, Ho-Pin Tung did again one of his cannon ball starts. From the 18th position on the grid he was in lap 3 at the 7th place! 'I was very close behind number six and raced him. At the slippery track I made a mistake and I had to go on the grass. Attempting to recover the lost time I came I little too high on the kerbstones, the car spun on the wet and the engine stalled, tells the Chinese driver disappointed. 'But if you do not push, you will never win. Well, let's now concentrate on Hockenheim and forget Silverstone. After my second place in Monaco I would like to climb the rostrum again.'
