GOOD RACE FROM SERGIO PEREZ FINISHING 5TH.
VAN DER GARDE FINISHES 9TH.
The first British Grand Prix GP2 Series race at Silverstone took place today, with Sergio Perez the best of the two Barwa Addax Team drivers finishing in fifth place and Giedo van der Garde taking the chequered flag in ninth.
Sergio Perez started the race from 8th position on the grid. After making a good start, he was caught up in some tough battles with important rivals such as Pic and his own team mate. In the latter stages of the race he managed to keep up the pressure and was compensated on the last but one lap with an impressive overtaking on Vietoris. This gave him his final fifth position, which apart from being a good progression after starting eighth it also means he will start tomorrow's sprint race from fourth position.
Giedo van der Garde who started from seventh place on the starting grid did not have much luck, despite making a good start which enabled him to gain one position on the first lap. He kept up the same race rhythm as the leaders and after making his compulsory pit stop he managed to maintain a solid seventh position throughout the race. This would have ensured him 2 points and a great start position for tomorrow's second race but misfortune struck on the last lap. With only two corners left he drove over some debris left by another car and came off the track leaving the way open for two of his rivals to overtake.
Barwa Addax Team still has both drivers in the top five in the overall championship, with Giedo fourth and Sergio in fifth place. The Spanish team is also in the top three of the constructor's championship.
Tomorrow the second race will take place at 9.35 hrs local time here at the legendary Silverstone circuit and will be over 21 laps, covering a distance of 123.816 kilometres
