Onidi Second In Jerez, Top 10 For Coletti

Scuderia Coloni couldn’t hope for a better start of the 2012 season. In Jerez, where the GP2 teams gathered for the first collective test of the year, the Italian outfit confirmed their leading role in the paddock being again among the top-runners, as it was in the second half of 2011: Fabio Onidi closed the first day with the 2nd overall time with a 1’26”217, while Stefano Coletti posted the 9th fastest time, a 1’26”891.

Both the times where posted in the morning, while in the afternoon the team focused on long-runs, using a high fuel load and different race-oriented aero setups.

There was a lot of evaluation work to do, considering that it was the first test with the new set of aero regulations and the new tyre compounds provided by Pirelli, but the team coped well with both and ended the day with some very good sensations and the feeling that the work made during the winter break was aimed at the right direction.

Stefano Coletti: “It was a really positive day for us, we completed more than 50 laps and did a good job with race simulations, achieving some good laptimes considering that we never used the softer compound provided by Pirelli. We also tried the new max downforce set-up allowed by the rules, and I’m really impressed by the amount of grip the car can provide in such configuration, I immediately felt at ease. It was a good start, now we have another two days of hard work ahead of us”.

Fabio Onidi: “I had some very good memories of Jerez from the September testing session, and my objective for today was finding the same great feeling with the car I had in those days. I knew that I could do it, but I was surprised by how quickly I got that feeling back. Straight out of the box, in the very first laps, I understood that the car was really good and I could push as much as I wanted, so with the second set of tyres I managed to post some very quick laptimes quite easily. All the hard work we did with the simulator in the winter paid off, because on the real track the reference points were nearly the same, I was really impressed. We had a really good start, now we must keep momentum”.
