Istanbul, Bitter Race 2 For Scuderia Coloni
It was a bitter Sunday for Scuderia Coloni in Istanbul: the Italian team saw one of his drivers, Davide Rigon, sustain a left leg injury after being guiltlessly involved in a big crash with Julian Leal.
With 4 laps to go, Leal crashed into the back of Rigon’s car after misjudging the distance between the two cars while trying a passing move. The consequent impact with the pit wall was hard, and Rigon immediately understood that something was wrong. He has been transported to the Anadolu Medical Centre in Istanbul, where the injury is being investigated.
What happened to Rigon inevitably overshadowed the great race contested by Michael Herck. The Romanian didn’t have the best of the starts, and closed his first lap in P23; from then on, anyway, his race was amazing as he managed to lap with a very good pace while also being able to take care of tyre wear, a massive issue for this weekend. This amazing recovery meant that with 8 laps to go Michael entered the top 10, climbing to P9 when Clos had to pit to change is exhausted rubber. Unluckily, his charge was stopped by the Safety-Car brought on track by the Leal-Rigon accident, and his final place was P12 as he lost 3 places at the restart to avoid Ericsson’s car re-joining the track after a clash with Bird.
Paolo Coloni: “I’m really sorry for what happened to Rigon today. I think that it’s not worth adding words to what the TV images showed, the way how it happened it’s clear and it’s also clear that Davide can’t be blamed for anything. Now we are waiting to know more about his injury and about the recovery times. Obviously we hope to have Davide back with us soon”.
