Scuderia Coloni Istanbul qualifying report

Istanbul Park circuit

Davide Rigon and Michael Herck will start tomorrow’s debut race of the 2011 GP2 Main Series in P17 and P20 respectively. The Scuderia Coloni drivers had to face a difficult session, that was made even more complicated by the fact that the morning Free Practice was held on a wet track, giving the teams very few datas to work on. Furthermore, Qualifying was stopped three times due to drivers going off track: this was a huge setback for Rigon, who had to abort two tries due to red flags and closed the session with a 1’35”369. Michael Herck’s qualifying was ruined by a crash that prevented him from improving the 1’35”545 posted in the first part of the session. Luckily, Michael was unscathed, and the team is now investigating the reasons of the crash together with the GP2 technical staff, as a mechanical failure is not excluded.

Paolo Coloni: “It wasn’t an easy session for us, but what’s really important is that Michael had no consequences at all from the crash. We can’t rule out a mechanical issue as a cause for the crash, so we are looking into it with the GP2 guys to know more about what happened. I’m also very sorry for Davide: he had the speed to get a better result, but due to the strange session development he couldn’t put the sectors together. Our starting positions are not the ones we hoped for, but tomorrow’s race will be long, and we’ll do our best to overcome the odds”.
