GP2 is still in Bahrain, where the Series is holding its third round as a stand-alone event after racing together with the F1 Grand Prix last week. In an unusually compressed timetable, Free Practice, Qualifying and Race 1 are all taking place today, with the race scheduled for 3 PM CET.

Qualifying was held this morning, and it wasn’t an easy one for the Scuderia Coloni drivers. Stefano Coletti and Fabio Onidi ended in P12 and P18, posting a 1’43”206 and a 1’43”447 respectively.

On a track that proved to be very dirty at the start of the session everybody tried to go for their quick lap in the second half of Qualifying, but that meant that traffic started being an issue. Drivers slowing down to create room for a clean lap hampered other drivers’ performances, and that was clearly an issue, together with a very high number of yellow flags waved during the session.

Both Coletti and Onidi were damaged by the situation, that prevented them from making the most of a potential that hinted to much better results, as team boss Paolo Coloni explained: “It’s really a pity: both our drivers are really happy with their cars, but we are starting from 6th and 9th row. Traffic really ruined our session today. If we look at the ideal laps of Stefano and Fabio, both were in line for a top 5 qualifying, so you can imagine how disappointed we can be. Anyway, we are taking the positives from the session. The pace is definitely there and the race will be long, so we are confident that a good recovery is possible for both”.
