SCUDERIA COLONI IS READY FOR SEASON KICK-OFF
It's hard work time for Scuderia Coloni in Abu Dhabi, as the team is making the last preparations to get ready for what can be considered the kick-off of GP2's third era.
On the Yas Marina Circuit, from tomorrow, the teams will put on track their Dallara GP2/11 cars, getting the first testing occasion with GP2's new machinery after the quick shakedown at Paul Ricard in November.
The timetable in the Emirates will offer much more track time, with two full days scheduled for February 2-3 and other two days on February 6-7, both preceding the first GP2 Asia races of 11-12 February still in Abu Dhabi.
So, on the next few days the team will have some precious time to get acquainted with the new car and with the new Pirelli tyres, a critical variable in the car's performance equation. This testing hours will be more important than ever, giving the engineers the chance to verify the results of the winter simulation work and also more time to work with the drivers, honing an already good feeling with Michael Herck and James Jakes.
Coming to the drivers, these test days will be a much awaited moment after the winter break, and both will arrive in Abu Dhabi boosted by the great performances posted in the last sessions with the "old" car: Herck, who was staggering fast in every session, was dominant on the last day also posting the quickest overall time, while Jakes was quickest on his very first day with Scuderia Coloni, leaving the nearest competitor 0.5 adrift. As a consequence, everything seems in place for a great season start.
Paolo Coloni: "Every season kick-off is a special moment, but this will be really intense as it's the start of a new three-year period, with a brand new car and a new tyre manufacturer. We are ready for the challenge and we know that working in the right direction from the very first moment will be vital: obviously during the winter our engineers worked a lot with the simulator and we are sure that this will prove very useful. We also know that we have a very strong driver line-up from every point of view: Herck has the right amount of experience to give his best on track and in 2010 he improved steadily, showing in testing that he's one of the quickest guys out there. Jakes, meanwhile, comes from a very good school as GP3 is, and in testing he already showed us that that experience prepared him for GP2 very well, giving even more consistency to his great natural talent. So we have everything to aim steadily for the podium, even if we know that it will be very hard because all the others will be trying to achieve the same, and because having F.1 teams that are supporting some GP2 outfits raised the bar even more. Anyway looking for challenges is part of our DNA, and we are proud of being part of a top motorsport category like GP2".
