Scuderia Coloini Is Ecstatic Over Filippi's Nurburgring Win

A dominating win after that everybody in the team boasted a perfect job, from the driver to the pit wall crew and to the mechanics who performed the pit stop. That’s how Scuderia Coloni celebrated the return of Luca Filippi to the outfit stables and the Italian’s 100th start in the Series, with an impressive success in the Feature Race in Nürburgring.

Filippi started from P2 on the grid after yesterday’s qualifying and when the lights went off he kept the position following poleman Pic into the first corner. Then the Safety-Car was called in for a contact in the back of the field, and at the restart Luca controlled the race, keeping a steady gap of around 1”5 to both Pic in front and Grosjean behind him.

The team’s strategy was to push while the others were doing their pit-stops, and that’s exactly what Luca did: stopping one lap later than his rivals, Luca made the most of that extra lap to cancel the gap from Pic with a really quick flyer, and then he did put his fate in the hands of Scuderia Coloni’s pit crew. The guys did an amazing job and thanks to their quickness the strategy worked, sending Luca out in front of everybody else with a 0”5 gap!

What can you say after a race where you had the best driver, the best car, the best strategy and the best pit crew.

With 16 lap to go there was still a lot to do, but Filippi was perfect again: in the first laps after the pit-stops he didn’t push too much, waiting for the tyres to reach the right temperatures. Once this was achieved he upped his game, boasting a pace that nobody could match. His advantage over Pic steadily grew, reaching 2” on lap 25, 4” on lap 29 and 5”5 at the end of the race, the proof of a race pace that was simply too quick for the others. Doing so, he gave Scuderia Coloni the eight win of his GP2 history and 11 points that are very important for the teams’ classification.

Meanwhile, Michael Herck closed the race in P12. The Romanian driver, who started from 16th place on the grid, had a difficult first part of the race and emerged from the pit-stop in P23. Anyway his second half of the race was impressive, as he managed to recover until 12th position.

Paolo Coloni: “What can you say after a race where you had the best driver, the best car, the best strategy and the best pit crew. I can only say thanks to everybody for their amazing job, we clinched a result that realizes our potential and all the amount of work we did in these months both on track and on the simulator, with Davide Rigon in the beginning and then with Kevin Ceccon. They deserve to be praised for the help they gave us, and the same obviously goes for Luca: today he was amazing, he was just too much for the rest of the pack and he made the most of our strategy. I’m also pleased that this wins came in Nürburgring, one of the few tracks where we never won before. Thanks again to all the guys, I’m really delighted”.

Luca Filippi: “Celebrating my century in GP2 like this, well it couldn’t be better. It’s also the best way to say thanks to Paolo Coloni for trusting me, I’m so happy that we are living this special weekend together. I had a marvellous car, one of the best I’ve ever driven in GP2, and our strategy worked flawlessly: at the start I just controlled the race, as my aim was to reduce the gap to Pic just before the pit window opened. I managed to do that, and then when he stopped I had an extra lap to push and go ahead of him. I did a really fast lap, and when I saw how quick the guys were in the pit-stop, I was sure that I was going to take the lead. From then on I just focused on not ruining the Pirellis in the first laps, and then I pushed as much as I could. Hearing the team that lap after lap was telling me how the gap was increasing was amazing. Winning again is an incredible feeling, thanks again to all the people that worked to make it possible”.
