It was Nico Rosberg's time for victory today, in the GP2 series sprint race held at Magny-Cours, France to complete the fifth double round of the season. Top three was completed by Hiroki Yoshimoto and Heikki Kovalainen, who comfortably leads the standings.
The 25-second of gap between winner Rosberg and Yoshimoto after 28 laps of racing shows that it wasn't any head to head fight in the front. And the reason was the demolishing pace of Rosberg from the green lights on.
"I had a fantastic start and I pushed like hell, and it was great to get away -- it was a lot of fun because the car felt good, and that's when it's fun. That's when the Finnish racing spirit comes out, and no one can stop you then!", commented the ART Grand Prix driver minutes after the podium.
Since the fourth place in the second race in Spain, Rosberg has always finished in the top five places, including two third places. But today's victory is what the Finn needed this weekend. "I was really going for it", he said.
Rosberg's perfomance in the sprint race made him forget the disappointing result of race one where he only took seventh. "I knew we were quick yesterday, and I knew that we had the car for today, so I got what I was looking for!"
With the points added today, Rosberg has jumped in the championship positions. " I made a big step forward this weekend. I think I'm third, and Adam is only a few points ahead, so that was very good for me", mentioned the winner.
Second place belonged to the surprise of the day: Yoshimoto claimed his first season podium in France. "This is the first time that we didn't have any problems throughout the weekend, and when we didn't have any problems we had a good result", he said.
The Japanesse had a comfortably race from the first place in the grid after taking eigth place yesterday. The BCN team driver catched second place in the start and then just managed to keep a steady pace until the podium.
"I was trying to look after my tyres and not damage them, drive very carefully and control it. I thought I can't catch up to Rosberg, so that means I don't have to push so hard but I just need to make a result", Yoshimoto commented.
The second position of the Japanesse ment the first podium in the season for the BCN team.
Kovalainen always seems to be there at the finish. And the Finn managed again, with his great driving, to get a podium finish. "We had a good balance in the car again, and I managed to close on the other guys quite comfortably and then make clean moves", he stated.
The Arden International driver had a race with fights in all fronts. The one with Adam Carroll put the fans on their feet when the Finn passed after a side-by-side battele and a couple of tires in the dirt.
Kovalainen had taken the victory yesterday and with today's third place closes a fantastic weekend. "It was a good one. it's good, and the championship is looking better after here than before, but we still have to improve it. So we'll see -- we'll still keep working", were the confident words of Kovalainen.
The championship has Kovalainen as comfortable leader with 52 points, followed by Carroll, 34, while third place is shared by Gianmaria Bruni, Rosberg and Scott Speed, all them with 29 points. Jose Maria Lopez completes top six places with 25 units.
Next weekend will continue the GP2 action in Silverstone for the British GP.
