Rosberg fastest as GP2 series gets first taste of rain
14/06/2005 -- The first day of GP2 series testing at Circuit Paul Ricard has seen ART Grand Prix's Nico Rosberg set the quickest time, before rain fell in the South of France. Nico Rosberg set a sublime pace around the 3.853km "3D" track configuration in use for today's GP2 series testing session at Circuit Paul Ricard. The ART Grand Prix driver set his lap in the afternoon session, shortly before the sun was replaced by a rainstorm whcih affected the last hour of the test.
Track conditions had been cold all day, with a light sprinkling of rain affecting the morning session. It soon dried up, however, and despite another shower at lunch, laptimes got quicker as the afternoon progressed in the dry. With an hour to go, however, the heavens opened and the track was englufed in a heavy rainstorm. All the drivers took the track with renewed vigour, as the rain allowed them their first opportunity to try out Bridgestone's wet-weather GP2 series tyres.
As such, the times remained as they had been before the rain started to fall, with Rosberg leading the way on a 1:16.380. Nurburgring race winner Clivio Piccione took his Durango to second on a 1:16.903, with Neel Jani (Racing Engineering) third on 1:16.984. Fourth place went to Ernesto Viso (BCN Competicion) on a 1:17.178, who was followed by Scott Speed (iSport International) 1:17.182, Heikki Kovalainen (Arden International) 1:17.199, Nelson Piquet Jr (Hitech Piquet Sports) 1:17.307, Adam Carroll (Super Nova International) 1:17.368 and Ryan Sharp (DPR) 1:17.430. The top ten was rounded out by Giorgio Pantano (Super Nova International) on a 1:17.469.
Testing resumes at 09:00 tomorrow.
