Paul Ricard F2: Sette Camara beats de Vries in practice

McLaren Formula 1 junior Sergio Sette Camara delivered a late lap to set the fastest time in Formula 2 practice at Paul Ricard.

ART Grand Prix’s Nyck de Vries, whose first Le Mans 24 Hours outing last weekend ended with a high-speed crash, topped most of the session as his benchmark time looked unassailable.

But with seven minutes to go, DAMS driver Sette Camara delivered a session-topping lap, a 1m44.506s, which he then improved to a 1m44.009s with two minutes remaining - marking the first session he has topped all season.

The Brazilian's late improvement left him exactly 0.6s clear of de Vries, while the latter's teammate Nikita Mazepin’s late-session spin ended a chance of de Vries decreasing the gap.

Luca Ghiotto of Virtuosi Racing took third, a further 0.060s back, while Ferrari junior and Prema Racing driver Mick Schumacher sealed fourth.

Schumacher's fellow Ferrari junior Callum Ilott delivered the fifth-fastest lap ahead of fellow rookie Guan Yu Zhou (Virtuosi).

Sean Gelael produced some flamboyant moments in his Prema-run car, but welded a strong lap together for seventh in the closing stages, ahead of points leader Nicholas Latifi (DAMS), who contested first F1 practice for Williams earlier in the morning.

Ralph Boschung, who only found out he was able to race for Trident this weekend on Thursday afternoon, took ninth ahead of Carlin's Nobuharu Matsushita.

Jordan King, back with MP Motorsport this weekend after missing last month's Monaco round while racing in the Indianapolis 500, was only 17th-fastest.
