Ocean Racing Technology prepare for GP2 Asia Series
First test in Spain heralds the dawn of a new season
After just a short break, Ocean Racing Technology will be back in action once again when they take to the Jerez Frontera circuit in Spain, for the first winter test of the GP2 Asia Series ahead of the 2009/10 season opener at Abu Dhabi at the end of October.
After their first complete season in the GP2 Main Series, where they secured their first victory, three podiums and 44 points, the Portuguese team is aiming to be even more competitive and intends to make the Jerez test very profitable, as well as those at Paul Ricard in November, in order to determine the official line up of the team directed by Tiago Monteiro and Jose Guedes.
Now, after a full season during which Ocean Racing Technology showed the true extent of its know-how, Tiago Monteiro is confident of making the right choices: "We are already satisfied with the screening we made on the drivers market and we know with whom we will run in Jerez. We chose them because they're young and because they've all been successful in the categories they've competed in. Most of them don't have GP2 experience but it is a source of motivation for them because they know they have to give the maximum in a very competitive car."
The drivers who will take to the wheel for the Jerez testing session for Ocean Racing Technology are (Swiss) Fabio Leimer, (Czech) Josef Kral, (Venezuelan) Rodolfo Gonzalez and (French) Charles Pic. Jose Guedes explained the way the things will work out:"It is almost certain we will have an experienced driver alongside a rookie. It seems to us it is a good balance which will allow us to gather two different talents with two specific career plans. Jerez will be the first step. During the three days in Jerezthey will have the opportunity to run intensively. Later on, at the Paul Ricard track, we will test five drivers and from then on we will be able to decide which drivers will race for us next season. These tests, as well as the one just before the Abu Dhabi meeting, are very important for the selection of the drivers who will defend Ocean Racing Technology's colours in the Asian championship."
The first two races of the GP2 Asia Championship will take place between October 30 and November 1. This year, the GP2 Asia Series will have four race weekends, between Abu Dhabi and Bahrain. The decision to shorten the championship is aimed at reducing the travel costs of the teams. But before they make their voyage to Asia, all eyes will be on Spain where the four drivers selected by Ocean Racing Technology will have to put their know-how into practice and prove they can continues to reinforce the team.
