Nurburgring, Race 1: Maldonado and Hirate score points in a faultless race.
Trident Racing ended up a very positive day by scoring points with both the team`s drivers. In today`s Race 1, Pastor Maldonado and Kohei Hirate ended up two flawless runs respectively in fifth and sixth place. Both the Japanese and the Venezuelan had a great start, with Maldonado taking third spot, while Hirate ended lap 1 in 9th place. After the mandatory pit-stop, Pastor fell back in 5th, followed by his team-mate, who was good enough to pass him and try an attack for fourth. Tomorrow at 10.00 the two will take off respectively from 3rd and fourth place.
Maurizio Salvadori, Team Owner
"All the team shown a great professional level today, earning a double and valuable points finish. Maldonado was slowed down by a notable consumption of his set of tires, but kept it up to score points, that are vital for his standings position, and acted like a real professional when the pits shown him he was slower than Hirate. I`m very happy for Kohei, who captured his first GP2 Series points. On a well-known track, he finally deployed a growing potential, and I hope this will be a positive turnaround for his future".
Kohei Hirate, 5th
"I made a good start, that allowed me to move up 5 positions: the outside line I chose at the first corner paid off, avoiding any contact. We opted for a late pit-stop strategy, so I was even able to push while leading, and, thanks to a very driveable car, reach my team-mate after the pit-lane exit. At that point, I closed up on Pantano, but the race ended when I caught his slipstream. I`m glad I finally managed to score a points finish and clinch a good spot for tomorrow".
Pastor Maldonado, 6th
"What a start! Right after takeoff I found a hole in the field, passing four cars at the fist corner. Then, during the first lap I also moved on Pantano, finding myself in 3rd, but just couldn`t keep the rythm imposed by Di Grassi and Glock. In the final stages I had a tire problem, being forced to slow down to make it to the end. Sixth place is a great result, that allowed me to earn valuable points in standings".
