Clivio takes Victory in Nurburgring!
Clivio Piccione claimed his first win in the GP2 series at the Nurburgring with a 6.8 second lead, after a hard fought action-packed race.
From his second place on the grid as the cars started the formation lap there was a moment of tension as Clivio's Durango hesitated before finally pulling away. At the start, Clivio reached the tight 1st hairpin in fourth position behind Bruni, Jani and Piquet Jnr. On the second lap the same hairpin saw a crash between Lopez, la Pierre, Premat and Kovalainen, but the Monegasque driver was ahead of the mêlée.
The positions remained the same for the first half of the race with Clivio holding steady between Piquet Jnr and Nico Rosberg. By lap 12 Bruni had increased his lead to over 4 seconds and pressure was building behind Jani who was holding up the rest of the field. Into turn 1, Clivio attacked Piquet Jnr and there was a coming together between the two cars but no damage occurred. Rosberg tried unsuccessfully to get passed and remained in fifth but kept close behind Clivio ready to attack. With 9 laps to go Bruni experienced a problem and slowed down considerably on the track. As the rest of the field sped passed him the pace heated up with the realisation that victory was open. Again into turn 1 Clivio attacked Piquet Jnr, the cars touched but still both cars were undamaged. This time Rosberg made his move passing Clivio for fourth.
With seven laps to go, Clivio showed his fighting spirirt as he attacked Piquet for the third time, again the cars came together butboth were able to continue. As Piquet and Rosberg attacked each other, Piquet made a mistake and Clivio saw his chance and pulled past to third. On the final corner of lap 18 Clivio attacked and passed Rosberg then on the start/finish straight he advanced on Jani and with a clean manoeuvre out of turn 1 overtook Jani for the lead. With clean air Clivio imediately pulled away from the pack and within one lap had a clear lead of almost four seconds. Over the last three laps as the battle for the remaining podium postions continued in the field, Clivio continued to pull away, taking the chequered flag with a 6.8 second lead.
With his victory Clivio showed a perfect mix of aggressive driving whilst controlling the field and his car and tyres. This is the Monegasque driver's first victory in GP2 and with a total of 8 points he now lies in 11th position in the championship standings.
"This was a great great race! There was so much action in the second half with something happening at every corner. I didn't know the track before the weekend but this is exactly the sort of race I love with close race action. For most of the race I was fighting with Piquet Jnr and Rosberg but I kept my head and waited for the right moment to make my move. When the moment came on lap 19 and I pulled passed Rosberg and then Jani into the lead, it felt really amazing. It was a very special moment to hear the Monegasque national anthem on the podium, I won't forget that for a long time. I was I'd like to thank my team for all their hard work this weekend, this result is for all of us and for my mum too as it's Mothers Day!"
