Clivio seventh and claims first two points

Clivio Piccione finished seventh after a determined and eventful first race at the Nürburgring, securing two valuable points. He will start tomorrow's race from the front row of the grid in second position.

As the fastest Qualifying lap times of Kovalainen, Rosberg and Premat were disallowed as they were posted under the yellow flag, Clivio's grid position improved from 16th to 14th.

Race 1 of Round 6 seemed destined not to start as three formation laps were required, due to a total of seven cars stalling on the grid, before the race eventually got underway.

Clivio got off to a strong start and managed to avoid the five-car pile-up at the first corner, involving team mate Monfardini, by pulling wide onto the grass. As the Safety Car was deployed, Clivio was already racing in sixth position. When racing resumed on Lap 3, Clivio overtook Piquet Jnr for 5th place and moved up immediately to challenge Jani, who he passed on Lap 5. On Lap 6, as Lopez went off into the chicane, Clivio took his chance to move up to third position behind Pantano and Bruni.

Pantano pitted on Lap 8 and Clivio ran in second behind Bruni keeping close to the Coloni driver. On Lap 12, Bruni, Clivio and third-placed Lopez all came into the pits at the same time. Unfortunately, a problem with the nut of the front left and rear right wheel meant significant time was lost and by the time Clivio rejoined the track he was down to 14th position. Clivio showed gritted determination, fighting his way through the field for the remaining laps. Clivio first attacked and overtook Yoshimoto on Lap 16, swiftly followed by Mathias Lauda for 11th position. With consistently fast lap times, Clivio continued to plough through the field past Sharpe, Alvarez, Lopez and Bruni.

In seventh position and on the final lap of the race, Clivio was relentless and continued to attack Jani for sixth position but didn't manage to get past before the chequered flag. Clivio claimed his first two points of the series and with his seventh position finish, will start Race 2 from P2 on the grid.

Clivio:
"What a fantastic race, I really enjoyed myself today, the car was awesome from start to finish. The three formation laps were a nightmare as my car was overheating and I had had a problem with the starter coupling in the gearbox so had to be pushed to start. At the actual start, I got away well and managed to avoid the crash at the first hairpin by pulling really wide with Piquet Jnr nearly onto the grass. I then started to plough my way through the field and really enjoyed the overtaking. Once in second position behind Bruni, I didn't want to push too hard as I thought he would pit first, but then we all came in together. It was a shame we lost so much time with the wheelnut problem, but as my car felt so good, I just continued to push as much as I could at least to get into the points. I'm really happy with seventh and it is very exciting to start the race tomorrow form the front row."
