Swinging on the Ring
The Nurburgring was far from Alexandre Premat's favourite... Until last week. "With a GP2 car, this circuit is just amazing ! It must be fabulous with a Formula One." The Frenchman took 8th fastest time i n the qualifying session, but he eventually slumped to 22 nd . "Kovalainen, Rosberg and I got a penalty for setting our fastest lap during a yellow flag procedure. My best and second best laps, which I did on new tyres, were therefore withdrawn."
Alex bounced back in a stunning Saturday's race. He chose the outside line at the start and quickly converted his 22nd position into an 11th at the first corner. "Then a crash happened in the second lap, and I could overtake Fauzy and Yoshimoto after the restart. I was 7th when the leaders pitstops put me in the lead." The ART Grand Prix driver pushed hard during his 5 leading laps, then had an efficient stop at the end of lap 15. "I got my 7th place back, and my race could begin for good. Coming out of the pitlane, I had to battle straight away with Piquet and Alvarez." Then he came back to put intense pressure on Barcelona winner Bruni... "Gianmaria was hard to pass, but the third attempt succeeded, when I braked much later than him on the outside." The battle continues with Jani, Lopez and Piquet for 4th place. "There has been a lot of overtaking in this crazy race. In the last lap, I was shadowing Piquet Jr. and passed him on the outside of Dunlop corner to finish 4th. I must admit that was something special."
On Sunday, Alex was 5th on the grid and an early crash involving Kovalainen, Lapierre and Lopez could have given him a podium finish opportunity... But there has been no finish at all! "Lopez spun but didn't keep his foot on the brakes so he bumped back into my rear wheel. A wishbone broke and that was it."
It's a pity but Alex is looking forward to his home race. "I have personally improved my pace a lot this week-end. Until now, I was driving the car like I used to drive my Formula 3. I think I have understood the method now and I feel ready to fight for victory in Magny-Cours."
