VITALY PETROV 4th, ROMAIN GROSJEAN FORCED TO RETIRE.
BARWA ADDAX TEAM STILL LEAD TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP.
The first GP2 Series race took place this afternoon at the German circuit of Nurburgring. Vitaly Petrov, driver of team leaders Barwa Addax Team came home in fourth place, while his team mate and overall leader of the championship Romain Grosjean, was forced to retire from the race when he was in sixth position, just two laps before the end of the race.
Vitaly drove a magnificent race after having made a flying start, which meant that he had climbed up fifth place at the end of the first lap from his eighth placed start. The Russian driver kept his fifth position until he came in to make his compulsory pit stop on lap 15, being one of the last drivers to do so, along with the leader of the race. He changed the two left sided tyres and got back on track to fight it out with Zuber on cold tyres. Once he got into fourth place, the race really had very few incidents to report and Petrov dedicated the rest of the time keeping up the rhythm with the leaders and ensuring a good start position for tomorrow second race. The Barwa Addax Team driver, consistent as always, once more showed a cool head under pressure.
Romain, who fought back from his thirteenth placed start, to be in tenth position at the end of the first lap, kept climbing through the field on the tight German circuit. He took the risk of being the first driver to come in to make his pit stop. The strategy worked perfectly, and after the other drivers had made their stops, the French-Swiss driver found himself in a magnificent sixth place, which he fought very hard to protect from the constant attacks of di Grassi and Parente, until the hydraulic system in his car cut out on the finishing straight with just two laps to go. It was a pity after such a great effort.
The Barwa Addax Team maintains its lead in the team championship on 78 points. The second placed team overall in the rankings is ART, 13 points behind the Spanish team on 65 points, with the third placed team a further 13 points back in the overall classification.
In the drivers championship everything has become tighter at the top of the leaderboard, with the three leaders, of which two are drivers of Barwa Addax Team, separated by just two points. Romain Grosjean still leads on 40 points, one point ahead of Nico Hulkemburg on 39 points, with Vitaly Petrov a further point behind on 38 points.
Tomorrow morning the second race takes place at 10.30 hrs local time. It will raced over 24 laps, covering a distance of 123.535 Kms.
