LOPEZ SUFFERED MECHANICAL FAILURE PROBLEM, FAUZY TAKES 14TH POSITION
Monza, 3rd September 2005
From the 5th position on the grid Jose Maria LOPEZ took a perfect start in today's Monza GP2 long race. Coming into the 1st chicane, Jose had a contact with Scott SPEED on the braking but managed to pass and was in the right position to get out of it in the top 3. Unfortunately his clutch failed and he retired on lap 2.
Fairuz FAUZY crossed the finish line on 14th position despite his lack of experience on this circuit and braking problems.
Jean-Paul DRIOT : "This is really frustrating to loose such opportunities to make top results. The team worked hard in the summer to find more performance and stay in the front, we were one more time in a good position for this race. Jose was in front of Piquet in the 1st chicane, and he had the speed to finish in front of him, we know that. This time a mechanical failure stopped him, we are really disappointed. Fairuz made some progress through the weekend, Monza is a special circuit and this precious experience will be important next year for him."
Jose Maria LOPEZ : "I had a very good start, it was quite hot in the first chicane but I had a good braking, I was in the fight for position 2, and my contact with SPEED did not damage any essential part of the car. Unfortunately my race stopped a few meters later."
Fairuz FAUZY : "My start was good, due to the crash in front of me I gained quite a lot of places. We decided to make the pit stop when the Safety Car came in and we changed the 2 rear tyres. Then the race was not very easy as my second set of tyres did not seem to be as good as my first one. Also my brake pedal was a little bit spongy and I had to pump on the pedal in the straights. It was a good experience for my 1st time here, and I look forward to race tomorrow, it will be a different race, shorter, with a different setup and approach."
Sunday Race - 21 laps - start at 10H00
