BARWA ADDAX TEAM WITH OPTIONS FOR TEAM TITLE IN PORTIMAO
After his fifth place finish in the second GP2 Series race at the Italian circuit of Monza, Vitaly Petrov lost his last hope of winning the drivers title, but it has to be said that he never gave up trying, right to the end. Davide Valsecchi finished in a creditable ninth position after starting from fourteenth on the grid. Barwa Addax Team still keep their hopes alive in the race for the team title in the Portuguese circuit of Portimao.
Vitaly Petrov put up a brave fight throughout the whole race. He made a great start from his seventh position start. He moved across the track to take the inside line into the first turn and attacked from the very start, but Di Grassi took the same line ahead and did enough to block the Russian driver's progress making it impossible for Petrov to overtake his German rival and leader of the championship, spoiling what could have been the perfect start.
Vitaly constantly pressured and tried to overtake Nico during the first part of the race but couldn't find a way past due to the equality between the two cars. In the middle part of the race he laid off a bit allowing the car to cool down, and in the latter stages the Barwa Addax Team driver attacked once more, as he appeared to be going better than his German rival. However, when trying to overtake he was forced to take risks, which in the end would go against him as he went wide at one turn, losing one place in the process and whatever options he may have had of keeping the driver's championship alive. Nevertheless, once he had cleaned the gravel on his tyres, Petrov kept on trying, including a personal best lap time in his efforts to get fourth or alternatively, the fastest lap time.
Davide Valsecchi has had two races this weekend in which he has shown a marked improvement at the wheel of the Barwa Addax Team car. He started from way back on the grid but he fought tooth and nail with the main group of drivers and finished in a creditable ninth position. His feat is even more surprising when one considers the bad luck that the team seems to be having with the supply of engines. On the straights, it was clear to see that he was suffering with less top speed than rivals such as Maldonado, Ceccoto, who passed him with ease on the straight. This demonstrated that the performance of his engine was clearly inferior to his rivals and really sums up the bad luck that the Barwa Addax Team has had throughout the whole season. Vitaly Petrov has been particularly affected by the engines supplied by the organization, being forced to retire from at least seven races with engine failure.
Vitaly will compete hard in the last GP2 Series race of the season, which takes place at the Portuguese circuit of Portimao next weekend. He will try to hold on to his runners up position in the drivers championship and help the Barwa Addax Team to win the team championship, a title they won last season.
