ACCIDENT RIDDEN RACE FOR BARWA ADDAX TEAM IN MONZA.
BOTH SERGIO PEREZ AND GIEDO VAN DER GARDE FORCED TO RETIRE
Barwa Addax Team had the misfortune of seeing the premature retirement of both drivers, after both Giedo van der Garde, on the first lap and then Sergio Perez on lap 5 suffered unfortunate accidents.
The race was over for the Spanish team almost before it had even started. Giedo van der Garde had made a great start having climbed from his 14th placed start to 9th in less than half a lap, when he was brutally shunted by another rival, whose car actually went over the top of his and left him out of the race. He had looked really sharp and it's a shame that this accident has come at a time when the Dutch driver was in his best form of the season. It also meant he couldn't pick up any points and defend his hard earned overall ranking.
Sergio Perez didn't fair much better and it was only four laps later when disaster struck, getting caught behind a multiple pile up caused by the drivers in front of him, Grosjean and Maldonado, leaving the Mexican driver with his left wing damaged. The Venezuelan driver had climbed up the back of the Frenchman's car and on the way down he fell on the Barwa Addax Team driver's car. He tried to keep going but had difficulty controlling the car. Just as he was about to come into the pits to replace the nose cone, he was hit by Herck on the right wing of the car which propelled him into the sidewall, leaving him out of the race. Just one of a long string of unfortunate incidents that have impeded the Mexican from showing his true credentials.
Barwa Addax Team maintain second place in the overall team championship. Sergio Perez holds on to second place overall in the drivers rankings . Team mate Giedo van der Garde lies in fifth position in the general classification.
The second GP2 Series race will take place tomorrow morning at the Italian circuit at 10.35 hrs. It will be raced over 21 laps of the Monza track.
