VITALY PETROV TOTALLY DOMINATES OFFICIAL QUALIFICATIONS IN MONZA. DAVIDE VASECCHI NINTH.
GREAT WORK FROM THE BARWA ADDAX TEAM.
Vitaly Petrov controlled the official qualifiers, which took place this afternoon at the Italian circuit of Monza. From the very start he dominated with tremendous authority and with his fastest lap finished the session more than four tenths of a second ahead of the second placed driver. This means that he will start from pole position for tomorrow's race and picks up two more points, which keeps his faint hopes alive for the driver's championship. Local driver Davide Valsecchi has shown some of his true potential and after working well with the team this weekend, will start from ninth on the grid.
Petrov and the Barwa Addax Team have demonstrated their class with a perfect session. Considering the Russian driver has been hampered all weekend by an elbow injury, causing him a lot of discomfort when driving, and the team solved the gear box problems from this morning's free practice in record time, it could be safely said that this has been a remarkable effort from all concerned.
From the start Vitaly was the first out on track and on his first flying lap, he set a spectacular time of 1.30.757 which was the fastest at the time. On the following lap he registered a fabulous 1.30.007, a time which would not be bettered by any of his rivals throughout the remainder of the session. The truth is no other driver was able to come even close to his mind blowing time, the closest was more than four tenths of a second adrift. Halfway through the session Petrov come out of the pits for a second series of laps. He set a couple of very fast times, which included on both occasions the fastest time in the second sector, but he was unable to improve on his best time. Nevertheless Petrov set the three quickest times of the day. Given the physical problems of Vitaly and thanks at the same time to the great teamwork of the Barwa Addax Team, the Russian driver retired from the session 8 minutes before the end, after a job well done and to ensure that the driver didn't aggravate his injury any more than was necessary.
Davide Valsecchi demonstrated his progress in the qualifiers, setting the ninth fastest time just when the track seemed to be getting slower. The Italian driver has driven in the same second as the leaders of the class, which means he will have his options of getting into the points for tomorrow's first race. Any points he can pick up will help his overall position in the rankings and are very important for the team in the fight for the constructor's championship.
With the two points picked up today for his pole position, means that Vitaly Petrov is still alive in the driver's championship, which now appears to be a two horse race. In the classification for the team title the difference between first and second has also been reduced which sets up a good race tomorrow over 32 laps of the Monza circuit. The first race, on a track that measures 5,973 metres, will cover a total distance of 185.067 Kms. The start will be at 16.00 hrs local time.
