What a pity!
In Monaco, Racing Engineering has demonstrated to be one of the teams to watch out for, but reliability has been the unbeatable enemy keeping the Spanish team from scoring well deserved points.
Borja Garcia was about to score his first points and only one step from achieving his first great result in the GP2 Series. An aggressive race helped Borja to make up for the 14th position on the starting grid. By half way through the race, the young Spaniard was already fighting in 5th position. But with only three laps to go and cross the finish line in an excellent place, an electric problem stopped his engine. Bad luck followed Borja from the beginning of the season, but with today's performance, Borja has demonstrated that he is definitely a front runner.
Neel Jani has once more made an amazing start and at end of the first lap was in 6th position, after starting from 9th. Neel was definitely competitive enough to fight for the top finish today. Unfortunately braking problems which became worse during the race, occurred on his car and caused him to hit the fence at the Casino corner. Keeping in mind the amount of retired drivers during the race, the podium was within reach. Nürburgring, which is next week, will be a good opportunity to finally get this much waited top three which Racing Engineering has been so close to but not reached yet.
A disappointed Borja Garcia mentioned after the race, "there isn't much to say. Racing in Monaco for the first time and running in an excellent fifth position with three laps to go the engine just stopped due to an electrical problem. I really am upset and disappointed".
Neel Jani commented, "I had a very good start making up three positions during the first lap. My car was really good today, but I realized quickly that my brakes weren't working at their best. I developed a long brake pedal and had to pump the brakes until all of the sudden the pedal went all the way to the floor at the Casino corner. I touched the fence there, but was able to make it back to the pits. However, it's a real shame as we had a great car today and I was really fast. I think I would have made it onto the podium since I saw that, for example, I was faster than the others. We lost out on a big opportunity".
Alfonso de Orleans-Borbon after this all but lucky race announced, "After Barcelona we thought the technical problems would have been overcome. Today's race proved us to be wrong. I am not at all happy. Both our drivers had great opportunities and were stopped from achieving well deserved finishes due to technical problems. Borja was doing a great job and it's incredible that his engine stopped with three laps to go. Neel was thrown out of the race by a braking failure and could have definitely made it to the podium today. We lost precious points".
