Pastor Maldonado (Trident Racing) won today's GP2 Series feature race at Monte Carlo taking his first GP2 Series race win, finishing over eight seconds ahead of Giorgio Pantano (Campos Grand Prix) on Bridgestone Potenza soft compound tyres, after starting from pole position.
Monte Carlo is the only race of the season that Bridgestone use soft compound tyres in the GP2 Series. Being a low grip street circuit high grip is required from the tyres for all 45 laps on the narrow roads and tight corners that make up the challenging Grand Prix track.
With just one GP2 Series race held in Monaco this weekend, Timo Glock (iSport International) now leads the Drivers' Championship with 37 points, followed by Luca Fillipi (Super Nova International) on 21 points.
Sebastien Buemi made his GP2 debut this weekend replacing Michael Ammermuller at ART Grand Prix, after a last minute driver change on Wednesday, when Ammermuller was announced still unable to drive due to a wrist injury. Buemi, aged 18, is the youngest driver in GP2 this year and finished an impressive seventh, after qualifying in fourth place.
The fourth round of the GP2 Series takes place at Magny-Cours 29 June - 1 July when the series will return to a two-race format, with a feature race scheduled for Saturday and a sprint race for the Sunday. For France, teams will be running on Bridgestone Potenza medium compound tyres and Ammermuller is expected to reclaim his race seat, having missed two rounds in Barcelona and Monte Carlo.
Hirohide Hamashima, Director of Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development, said: "This was a very hard race for drivers and one which I believe satisfied spectators desires to see good competition. The circuit was getting better and better during the race and this was seen by very good lap times being set in the later laps. The rubber was integrating well with the circuit and it will affect performance tomorrow for the Formula One race. There were many incidents resulting in two safety car periods. Some drivers were disadvantaged by this but certain drivers showed very nice driving techniques on the narrow street circuit."
