SERGIO PEREZ JUST 33 THOUSANDTHS OF A SECOND OFF POLE AND GIEDO vd GARDE 12th
GOOD PROSPECTS THIS WEEKEND FOR BARWA ADDAX TEAM.
The GP2 Series qualification session for the Monaco GP took place at the street circuit of Monte-Carlo this afternoon in rain affected conditions. The Barwa Addax Team drivers have had mixed fortunes with Sergio Perez finishing second and Giedo van der Garde twelfth.
Sergio Perez has been in the leading positions all day. In the free practice sessions this morning, he finished with the 2nd best time and in the qualifyers he finished only 33 thousandths of a second behind the pole position. He has shown his pedigree, being within the leading times in both wet and dry conditions and everything points towards a good result for him and the Barwa Addax Team for tomorrow's race.
Giedo van der Garde, having finished sixth after the free practice session, never really got into the same rhythm in qualifying. In the wet he was among the leading times but as the track started to dry out, the drivers went all out to try to improve on their times and this coincided with various accidents and yellow flags. When van der Garde did manage to produce a time in the first and second sector good enough to put him in a top three position, he was held up by heavy traffic which ruined the third sector and consequently his lap time. It is a shame because his race rhythm is worthy of a higher place and here in Monaco the start position is crucial.
In this special event in the Principality, the races will be on a street circuit of 3,340 metres. The first race is on Friday 14th at 11.15 hrs and will be competed over 42 laps and the second race will take place on Saturday 15th over 30 laps.
