LAST YEAR'S MONACO WINNER UNABLE TO RETAIN CROWN

Adam Carroll's dream of retaining his Monaco crown failed on the first lap of the famous circuit along with his engine. It was a chaotic start with a massive shunt, several crashes and stopped cars and by the second lap almost a third of the grid were out of the race. Last year the 23 year old from Portadown in Northern Ireland, claimed one of his three GP2 wins round the historic streets of Monaco and had been looking forward to doing well here again.

"I could feel it in turn one and by the time I'd got to Casino the engine just stopped. Maybe the engine just thought the race was 45 seconds and not 45 laps - I'm not sure why but it just gave up". "I looked behind me and saw my team mate Javi Villa stopped too and thought what a bad day for my team Racing Engineering".

The race was eventually won by fellow Brit Lewis Hamilton, who started from pole.
