Heikki Kovalainen and Nicolas Lapierre will start Saturday's GP2 race in Magny-Cours from fourth and seventh places respectively, and both men are confident that they can improve on those positions in race trim.
The series is getting up to speed again after a break of a month since the last round at the Nurburgring, and the French event is the first of four in five weekends, which means a total of eight races.
Neither driver was completely happy with their car in qualifying, but the Arden machines have generally been more competitive in race trim this season.
Both men are familiar with the circuit. For Nicolas this is of course his home race, while Heikki took pole and won in the 2004 World Series event.
Heikki Kovalainen: "Today to be honest I don't think I was quick enough to be on pole. The first set of tyres was a little bit better than the second set. But I made a little mistake in the last right hand corner before the last chicane, but it was not worth a lot. I think today we were not quite strong enough. I don't know why, because the balance doesn't seem too bad, and I don't know where to go quicker, to be honest! I still think we are going to be strong in the race. It is normal that we lack a little bit of speed in qualifying. This is my second best qualifying of the year, after Monaco where I was on pole. I expect to be stronger compared to the others. We will see the real story tomorrow with race set-up."
Nicolas Lapierre: "I am happy to be racing in France! I used to race here a lot and I know the track quite well, but a lot of people know it, so I don't think it helps too much. Qualifying was not really good, not really bad, could be better, could be worse. The car was not perfect and there were a few little mistakes. It was very close, but we are starting from the fourth row. I think we can have a good race and I think the car will be really fast, so I am looking forward to tomorrow. We need some good points to restart everything after the break, but starting seventh, I think we can have some points. This is an important month with four races in July. I is crazy, but we have to keep concentrated and finish as many races as we can."
