Argentinean driver Jos? Mar?a L?pez took the victory Sunday in the sprint portion of the GP2 series double round at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. The other two podium finishers were Nelson A. Piquet and Scott Speed.
"My last win was Estoril 2003 in the Renault V6 so I'm very happy. I was aiming for the win this weekend. Today I knew I had the possibility to win if I did a good start, and just like yesterday I made a really good start. I got past Adam and I was quicker than him for the whole race. That allowed me to keep cool", commented the DAMS driver.
L?pez dominated the race, even when the field bunched behind the pace car due to caution flag on lap five, while the battle behind him was intense.
Second place belonged to Nelson A. Piquet. The Brazilian was the protagonist along Carroll in the struggle for the podium. "I'm really happy with the result but I didn't want the race to end that way", Piquet said.
The current British F3 champion had an incident with Carroll when the race was reaching end. "I was close to Adam the whole way. In some places he was quicker, in some places I was. On the final straight I thought Adam would brake late but he did it early instead and, more of a reaction than anything, I went on the inside, he turned into me and we collided. I feel bad that it happened and I've already apologized", Piquet explained.
North American Speed proved one more time his talent in GP2. The iSport racer added another podium in both races; his third counting the one at Imola. "It's a good surprise", said Speed about the result.
In his post-race comment, Speed mentioned: "It really is impossible to pass here. Had a bit of an incident on the restart. I was fighting Jani and Bruni and I got on the marbles. It was my mistake and I kind of lost the back. I held Jani off and I didn't see what happened to Bruni. Then I just starting reeling the other guys in. Piquet made quite an aggressive move on Carroll so that helped us and put us on the podium."
After four races, the standings fight is on fire with four drivers within just three points. Heikki Kovalainen, who didn't finish the race today, and Speed share the lead with 20 points. In third place appears yesterday's race winner, Gianmaria Bruni with 18, while L?pez has 17 so far in the season.
The teams' championship has Arden International in the head with 24 points, followed closely by iSport with 20, Coloni with 18 and DAMS with 17.
GP2 series will continue their inaugural season, with their next race at nothing less than Monaco on May 21st; their first street course.
