Argentine racer José María López snatched today his first ever GP2 Series pole position in the qualifying session for Saturday's race one on the circuit Nevers Magny-Cours, in France. Former F1 driver Timo Glock and Italian`s Giorgio Pantano completed the top three seeds.

With track temperatures of over 50 degrees, López set a time of 1:23.911 in his first flying lap on board the Dallara-Renault of Super Nova to secure the pole position in the beginning of the session.

López was able to confirmed with the pole the strong pace shown during the mid-season tests of GP2 in Paul Ricard.

"We've been quick all the time at Paul Ricard, and all the people are saying he's only quick in Paul Ricard, so it's good to come here and show that we can be quick. I feel really, really, really happy. I know it's not the end, because we have the race tomorrow, but it's the beginning", the Argentinean commented.

The pole position comes in a important moment for López, who coulnd`t add any points in the past three rounds (Catalunya, Monaco and Silvertsone). "The car worked in a fantastic way. I made my time with the first tyre set where I was able to have a clean lap and with no mistakes I managed to mark the time that gave me the pole", he explained.

About Saturday`s race, the Super Nova credit knows it will be hard, but the chance to take the win couldn`t be better. "We have a good pace with the car which allow me to think that tomorrow I have the great opportunity to take my first season victory".

So far, López owns one victory in the series and it was in a sprint race in Spain last year, racing for the French DAMS team.

German racer Glock completed his best qualifying result by clocking 1:24.031 to claim the second spot on the starting grid.

The German changed from BCN team to iSport International in Silverstone round and the season has improved a lot for the former driver of Jordan Grand Prix team in F1.

"It was quite good. I made a little mistake at the last corner, hit the kerb a little which upset the car a bit. We had our first race together in Silverstone, and then the two day test in Paul Ricard, and I think now we are coming up to the top three all the time, which is where we should be", Glock stated.

In the past round of Silverstone, Glock notched his first season podium taking second place. The German is surely thinking of his maiden victory in GP2 for tomorrow.

FMS International driver Pantano also proved to be fast in his top personal performance of the season so far. The Italian marked 1:24.057 to take third position.

"I know we had a chance to be on the pole but to be honest I wasn't pushing so hard in the start of qualifying, and that was when the track was best to find a good time. I think third is not bad, very close to the other two, and it's just a question of making a good start and then see what happens", Pantano secured.

Pantano had his strongest weekend in Silverstone taking a fifth and fourth place and now wants to continue his rising level by taking his maiden podium for Giancarlo Fisichella`s team.

Standings leader Lewis Hamilton put his ART Grand Prix on the second row after a lap time of 1:24.100 to be right ahead of his main rival in the championship chase, Nelson A. Piquet, who ended up fifth place.

Top ten were completed with Adam Carroll in sixth, followed by Alexandre Premat, Ernesto Viso, Franck Perera and Hiroki Yoshimoto.

It was an extremely competitive session, with the top 14 drivers separated by just one second, and the grid line-up looks set to provide an exciting racing in tomorrow's 41-lap race.
