Javier Villa will compete in the 2009 GP2 Series with the British team Super Nova, with whom is already taking part in the GP2 Asia Series, after reaching an agreement to extend their relationship to the European series.
The 2009 season will be the fourth in the F1 feeder series for the Spaniard, who has chosen to sign with Super Nova after weighing up the different offers he had to compete in GP2 with other teams and also to race in different championships such as the Le Mans Series, the 24 hours of Le Mans or even to take part in the North American championships, he had received significant offers in all of them.
An important key in Villa's decision has been the good work done during the winter season in the GP2 Asia Series with the British team as well as his conviction that the GP2 is where he must continue to compete. His clear aim is to take the maximum advantage this season of all the experience acquired in the category during his three previous years in GP2 competing with Racing Engineering. This collaboration has paid off with some important successes, turning Villa into the youngest winner in the history of GP2. Now there is this new step in Javier's career, already beginning next week at France's Paul Ricard's circuit, the venue for the first pre-season testing of the European series, which will start at the beginning of May at the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix.
Javier Villa: "It has not been an easy decision because we had a number of offers from several GP2 teams and also to do the Le Mans 24 hours, the Le Mans Series or even to race in America. But we think that GP2 is where we have to be and I feel very happy with Super Nova after the good work that we are doing in the GP2 Asia Series this winter."
Alfonso de Orleans: "Together with Javi we have studied the different options for 2009. With Formula 1 being the clear goal for the future, GP2 is the logical path for 2009.
Javi can look back onto great successes in this championship during his previous years and I am convinced he will deliver a great performance in 2009 with Super Nova. He is a talented and fast driver; I really hope he has a great season this year!"
