This morning at Montmelo Javier Villa has put a perfect end to the pre-season test of the GP2 Series setting not only the best time of the session but also the fastest laptime of the three days of testing that the 13 teams who compete in the category have carried out since Monday at the Catalan track.
As decided in their work program Javier and his team, Super Nova, dedicated the morning session to running qualifying simulations, something that the rest of the teams also chose to do, taking advantage of the good conditions of track and temperature to extract the best possible performance from the Dallara GP2 fitted with the Bridgestone medium compound tyres used in these tests.
In his first attempt, Villa has set the best time of the whole week, beating the records of the two previous days and putting himself at the top of the table. Although with the second set of fresh tyres the Spaniard couldn't improve his previous laptime, it was good enough that his rivals were not capable of beating it either, so Javier took the first position on the timing sheets of the morning session, with the bonus of the fastest time of the three days of tests in Montmelo.
With the target of running as fast as possible in qualifying conditions fulfilled, Villa and Super Nova will focus their work in the afternoon session in doing a race simulation and several tests of the ever important pit stops for tyre changes. This final session will see the work planned for these three days of tests completed and it is the final run before the beginning of the season coinciding with the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, an date for which Javier will be perfectly prepared, fully motivated after the very good results obtained in both the Paul Ricard and Montmelo tests.
Javier Villa's own words: "The morning session has been very good. We all went out to do qualifying simulations using two sets of fresh tyres. With the first one I ran very fast and set the best time, whilst with the second I couldn't improve any more, the tyres were slightly cold on the good lap and it prevented me from improving the tenth that I think we could have gained with the changes that we did to the car. Even though we ended the session with the fastest time, ahead of Parente and Di Grassi, with a time that is also the fastest set in all the tests of this week. In the afternoon I don't think that the laptimes will improve, we are doing a race simulation and some pit stop tests and with that we will finish the test. I think that we have worked very well throughout these days and to finish with the best time, and always being ahead, proves it."
