Javier Villa will have in Turkey a fresh chance to show all his skills at the wheel of the Racing Engineering GP2 Dallara in the second race weekend of the F1 feeder series.
The first race of the season, held less than a fortnight ago at Montmelo, didn't produce a result that was as good as expected for the young Spaniard. His good pace in Friday qualifying didn't ultimately translate to the top five place that was within his reach and a problematic getaway ruined all his chances in Saturday's feature race. Thus it was only in Sunday's sprint that Javier could finally show his true potential, with a magnificent recovery, from 14th on the grid to 6th at the finish which gave him his first point of the year, and importantly a boost to his moral that will be a help in facing the challenge of racing at the spectacular Istanbul Park.
On the Turkish track, Villa hopes to be in the fight for the top places, something perfectly within his reach as shown by his laptimes at Barcelona, always as fast or even better than those of his team mate Giorgio Pantano, who scored a third and a fourth place thanks to not suffering any of the setbacks that hampered Javi's performance.
Istanbul is quite a wide track with hard braking for the slow corners that follow its two long straights, so overtaking should be more possible than on other tracks. This means that qualifying near the front, even if important as ever, won't be as crucial as getting a good setup to have a car that is both fast and consistent throughout the race in order to be able to fight in the expected close battles over the two days. Getting that right balance between a good race setup without losing one lap speed so as to be competitive in qualifying will be the key to Javier Villa obtaining his first podium of the year and so continue with his plan of being one of the main contenders of this year's series as his target for the season.
