It was a race of missed opportunities for Direxiv Motorsport drivers Hiroki Yoshimoto, Olivier Pla and Clivio Piccione at Istanbul. All three could have scored points, but in the end only BCN's Yoshimoto added to his tally courtesy of eighth place which gives him pole for tomorrow's race. Despite a mid-race spin Yoshimoto battled through the pack to nick the final point off Pla (DPR) on the final lap. Piccione ran as high as seventh, but spun into retirement on oil.
Hiroki Yoshimoto, BCN Competicion: 8th
"I was a little lucky really because the two safety car periods allowed me to close up the gap after my spin. At the end I could see Pla ahead of me and for the last two laps I was saving my tyres so that I could have one last effort. Through the fast left-hander I was able to carry a lot more speed than him, and this allowed me to drive around the outside into the next corner. I think we have the pace to win the race tomorrow for sure."
Olivier Pla, David Price Racing: 9th
"It was a good race for me - apart from the last lap! Considering we've had really no running so far this weekend the race was not too bad. Early on I was racing with [Ernesto Viso] and he put me on the grass and this made my tyres dirty and caused me to spin. But I raced hard and overtook a lot of people. I really think that I deserved eighth place today."
Clivio Piccione, Durango Racing Team: retired
"I think we were capable of fifth or sixth today, which goes to show how much better our car is in the race than in qualifying. I had some contact with [Sergio] Hernandez on the first lap in turns one and three, but after that the car was fast and I was able to make up a lot of places. Later I braked in the same place as normal for Turn Nine and just lost the rear end of the car. I think there must have been some oil or something."
Misato Haga, President and CEO, Direxiv Motorsport:
"This was an eventful race for all three drivers. Hiro's first pole for tomorrow's race is a very positive outcome and bodes well for race 2 tomorrow. Olivier and Clivio were both very competitive throughout the race but unfortunately for them their results do not reflect that."
