GOOD PERFORMANCES FROM BARWA ADDAX TEAM IN TURKEY.
GIEDO VAN DER GARDE FOURTH. SERGIO PEREZ DISQUALIFIED.
Barwa Addax Team had placed both its drivers in the top five, at the end of the Turkish GP2 Series Grand Prix first race, with Sergio Perez finishing in fourth position and Giedo van der Garde fifth. However, the race stewards later disqualified the Mexican driver because of a slight mistake concerning the minimum weight of his car.
Sergio Perez started from fourth place on the start grid and after a very good start, he gained one position at the first corner. At this stage of the race it was clear to see that he was faster than the driver he was chasing and he made every effort to overtake, but his Italian rival managed to close all the gaps, holding him up at the same time. Things changed after his compulsory pit stop, when both drivers came in on the same lap. Thanks to a fantastic tyre change Sergio came back out on track in second position and he started to chase down the leader. Unfortunately he started to have problems with his front tyres, which meant he was not able to keep up his race rhythm in the closing stages of the race and he was more worried about holding on to his position than looking for higher goals. He finally came home in a gutsy fourth position only to be later disqualified by the race stewards for problems concerning the minimum weight of the car.
Giedo van der Garde started from sixth on the grid. He drove a solid race, maintaining a good race rhythm throughout. He came in to change tyres after the leading group of drivers and when he returned to the track is when he started to produce his best lap times. In the last third of the race he managed to catch up with his team mate Sergio, but rather than making an attempt to overtake he spent more time holding off another rival who was attacking him from behind. Nevertheless, he will start from a good position for tomorrow's second race which will help in his pursuit to pick up more points and improve his position in the overall rankings.
Sergio is still fighting it out for the top spot in the driver's championship, even though he has dropped to second overall. Giedo has climbed to fifth in the driver's classification and is now where he should be, in contention. Barwa Addax Team have consolidated their position in the race for the team title and lie second overall.
Tomorrow at 11.35 local time the second race will take place over 23 laps covering a distance of approximately 121 kilometers.
