Carroll delighted with Sunday race victory

Adam Carroll wowed onlookers with a storming fight from fourth on the grid to take victory in Sunday's GP2 series race. The Northern Irishman, who had looked good for victory in the long race yesterday before a penalty took him out of contention, grabbed the win following a daring manoeuvre on Frenchman Alexandre Prémat, which saw Carroll power-sliding onto the start- finish straight with armfuls of opposite lock.

Prémat eventually finished second, ahead of a charging Heikki Kovalainen. The Finn had driven another strong race after starting eighth on the "reverse" grid following his victory yesterday. The final points scoring positions went to Gianmaria Bruni (Coloni Motorsport) Olivier Pla (DPR) and Nelson Piquet Jr (Hitech Piquet Sports.)

"I'm very pleased. I didn't come here thinking whether I was going to win or not. You just do the best job you can: get the best out of the car, the best out of yourself and hopefully that's good enough. This weekend it was. The car was quick, really quick and I just drove it as hard as I could. Today it was good enough and I can't see why we won't be at the front at every track we go to this year. This is my type of car. It's got grunt, power and torque. You hit the throttle and it will light the rear wheels up. I love cars that oversteer, too, so this is just perfect. We know what works and what doesn't. We've just got to wait and see. This is a very good grid."

"It`s a great feeling but it was a difficult race. I'm very happy for the team and my mechanics. Since the beginning of the weekend I didn't have much running but for the weekend as I whole I am very happy. I got some points in race one, and now I'm on the podium. I had a good fight with Adam Carroll. Unfortunately I made a mistake into Rivazza, and when we got into the final corner I braked late, but he braked even later. The car is really good to drive and you have a lot of ability to play with it. I'm very confident for Barcelona. We got a good set-up there in testing so we should be competitive."

3rd Heikki Kovalainen Arden International.17 laps. +6.715

"I'm really happy to be here after starting in eighth. It was a difficult race but I managed to overtake some guys and get on the podium. The car felt very similar to yesterday so I knew how much I could push. It's nice to be leading the championship but to be honest it doesn't mean anything right now. We have a long way to go. I'm happy for Nicolas that he got some points too this weekend despite having some problems. I think the team is working well and I `m looking forward to getting to Barcelona."

Heikki leaves Imola at the head of the drivers' championship standings with 14 points, followed by Adam (10 pts). Gimmi Bruni and Jose Maria Lopez are tied for 3rd place on 8 points.

Arden International lead the teams' championship with 18 points as Nicolas Lapierre took pole on Friday and fastest lap during race 2.
