POINTS FINISH FOR DPR AT IMOLA
The British DPR team claimed its first points of the new GP2 Series in today 's second race of two at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, Italy.
Olivier Pla, starting from 9th on the grid - his finishing position in yesterday's inaugural race - fought through strong opposition to finish in 5th place. The Toulouse resident had endured a difficult time yesterday due to a very long brake pedal and a broken rear anti-roll bar which gave him bad understeer throughout the 37-lap race. He was therefore more than happy to pick up some valuable points today.
For DPR's British driver, Ryan Sharp, Imola is a race weekend which he will be only too pleased to put behind him. Yesterday the Scot rose as high as 9th from his starting position of 13th and would have been ideally placed to challenge for a points finish. Unfortunately, as he came into the pits for his second pit stop, his car lost all drive, leaving him stranded in the pit lane and unable to even reach the DPR pit. In today's 17-lap sprint race, during which there were no pit stops, Ryan was hampered by having to start from 21st (of 24 places) and a subsequent severely flat-spotted right front tyre which upset the handling of his car for the remainder of the race. He finished in 14th place.
Team Principal, David Price, summed up the feeling of the team just after the chequered flag fell on today's events: "To be honest, the weekend was less stressful than we expected. Whilst there were a lot of technical difficulties yesterday, when you think of what's been achieved in a few months, this weekend was very successful for GP2. Today's race was really good, very close, with plenty of overtaking and a lot of top quality drivers pitting their wits against each other."
Olivier Pla: "My target for this race today was to take some points so I'm happy to finish 5th. It's important to get the points and it gives us even more confidence for Barcelona, especially after our good test there. I think that's not so bad a result as both Ryan and I have had a very difficult time all weekend. In practice we had a technical problem after only 300 metres and, as I'd never been here before I had to learn the track in qualifying. Even then we couldn't do more than 4 or 5 quick laps because of another technical problem. The first race was not easy as I had no brakes so the car was very difficult to drive."
Ryan Sharp: "It was really hard work all weekend so to be honest I'm glad to get this one finished and am now looking forward to Barcelona."
