GIEDO VAN DER GARDE 4th, SERGIO PEREZ FORCED TO RETIRE.
BARWA ADDAX TEAM REDUCE DIFFERENCES IN TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP.
Barwa Addax Team close in on the leaders in the GP2 constructor's championship, as they reduce differences not only in the race but over the whole weekend. Giedo van der Garde crossed the finish line 4th and Sergio Perez was unfortunately forced to retire.
Giedo van der Garde held on to the fourth position that he started from on the grid. Today he was the only driver in the top five of the general classification to score points, which means that despite maintaining his fifth position overall, he reduces the difference between himself and the drivers just ahead of him in the rankings. At the same time he has stretched his lead over his pusueing rivals to eight points.
Sergio Perez had his fair share of bad luck in today's second sprint race. Starting from sixth on the grid, he made one of his usual excellent starts, fighting for a leading position at the first corner but the confusion created forced him back to sixth place. He started to attack hard in an effort to get up with the leaders before it was too late. His hopes were given an important setback when he tried to overtake Valsecchi, made contact, which made him spin and when he got back on track he was left right at the back of the field. Due to the damage caused by his accident, he was forced to retire. It was all really unfortunate because he was in position to reduce the differences with the leader of the driver's championship and at the same time put the team ever closer to the team leaders. The only consolation is that none of his direct rivals managed to get into the points.
Sergio is still the only possible challenger in the driver's championship. This weekend he has not only held on to his second position overall, but he has even managed to stretch away from his immediate rivals in the rankings. Giedo consolidates his fifth place overall. Barwa Addax Team, with both drivers in the top five, closes in on the leaders of the team championship, having scored more points than any other team this weekend in Hungary. The battle will be exciting right to the very end.
After a brief break in the month of August, the competition will get under once more in the Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, from the 27th-29th of August.
