SERGIO PEREZ MAKES THE PODIUM ONCE MORE AFTER FINISHING SECOND.

Barwa Addax Team driver Sergio Perez climbed onto the winner's rostrum again after having finished second in the first GP2 race, which took place this afternoon at the German circuit of Hockenheim. His team-mate Giedo van der Garde finished 12th, after being hit by rival Sam Bird.

Sergio Perez started from fourth position on the starting grid. He made yet another tremendous start and by the end of the first lap he was running in second position. From this moment the race became a head to head between Sergio and the overall leader of the competition. Although the young Mexican driver tried throughout the race to close down on the leader, including in the compulsory pit stop, the race positions stayed the same until the chequered flag. The race was yet another demonstration that the two drivers out in front are, without doubt, way ahead of the rest in this year's championship. If it hadn't been for a series of unfortunate incidents and circumstances, Sergio would be clearly right up there fighting out the championship with Maldonado.

Giedo van der Garde began the race from 10th place on the starting grid. He made a solid start and little by little was fighting his way back. He had climbed to 8th position when he came in for his pit stop, with tyre change included. He was looking to hold on to his position, which would have given him one point and guaranteed a fantastic start position for tomorrow's second sprint race. However, the driver who was just behind tried to overtake him at the chicane, where there was no space whatsoever, and the collision caused Giedo to spin. Sam Bird who was just outside the points, ruined any chance he may have had to pick up points and what's worse the possibility of starting in pole position for Sunday's race. It also would have been a great opportunity to secure a good result and pull away from one or two rivals in the overall rankings. The stewards penalized the British driver with a drive through penalty but this was of little consolation to Giedo who will have trouble picking up any points this weekend.

Barwa Addax Team remain second overall in the general classification for teams. Both drivers are still in the top five of the driver's championship. Sergio Perez has climbed up to third overall, having also reduced the difference between himself and the second placed driver, while Giedo van der Garde stays in fifth place in the rankings.

This weekend's second sprint race will take place tomorrow morning at 10.35 hrs local time. The race will be over 27 laps of the Hockenheim circuit covering a distance of 123.498 kilometers.
