Clivio secures second consecutive top ten qualifying position

Clivio Piccione will start from the fifth row of the GP2 grid for the second race weekend in a row after qualifying in tenth position at the Hockenheimring, Germany.

In the afternoon Qualifying session, Clivio completed two competitive runs which saw him clock up the 7th fastest time before pitting for new tyres. On his second outing of the afternoon, Clivio shot up to 4th on the timesheets on his first lap with fresh tyres. The session ended with Clivio qualifying in tenth place to start tomorrow's race on the fifth row of the grid alongside Championship leader Heikki Kovalainen.

Clivio:

"As soon as I took to the track in the Practice session this morning, I was pleased with the way the car felt. I had no major problems and I managed to improve lap by lap. This was true of the tyres as well and we managed to get more than just one fast lap out of them. The car was reasonably good and consistent and I felt in good shape for Qualifying.

Then in the afternoon session, in the first outing I went straight out on new tyres for two runs. The car was okay but didn't feel the same as it had done in the morning. This time there was more oversteer whereas this morning, there was more understeer. I tried to get the best of the tyres as quickly as possible but I wasn't really happy so I came in after the three-lap run. I thought maybe the car just felt different as it had drizzled on the track so we didn't make any changes to the car, except for tyres.

When I went out for my second run, the car felt the same as before. The oversteer seemed to really cost me in the last sector, the last two corners going onto the main Stadium straight. This meant I couldn't get power as early as I wanted to.

As seems to be our problem this season, we haven't found the perfect qualifying set-up but we look much better in race trim. Tyres seem to be the main thing here so I'm happy I managed to conserve mine today and they're in good shape for tomorrow as forty laps is a long race."
