VALENCIA, RACE 2: POINTS FINISH FOR HERCK
With a great performance by Michael Herck, Scuderia Coloni clinched their first points finish of this GP2 Main Series season.
The Romanian driver closed the race in 6th place with a very consistent drive, perfect from start to finish: when the lights went off Michael was brilliant off the line and then he chose the right line to avoid a crash just ahead of him, passing three rivals to take P7 behind Valsecchi.
Herck sticked himself to the tail of the Italian’s car, and on a treacherous track as Valencia he was impressive, making no mistakes and managing his tyres to avoid an excessive wear. This allowed him to grab P6 on lap 15, making the most of a spin by Kral, and then to still have the performance to chase Clos for fifth place. Michael was much quicker than the Spaniard and in just 3 laps he closed a gap of 5 seconds, but on the finish line he was still behind, even if with just a 0.2 gap from Dani.
Kevin Ceccon race wasn’t as lucky: the Italian driver was 18th on the grid but had another amazing start. Kevin then tried to gain as much positions as he could, but doing so he found himself on the wrong line at Turn 1 and missed the apex, rejoining at the back of the field. There he started fighting with Filippi and Ceccotto Jr, but in the fight he went through a run-off area and touched two road humps, causing his on-board camera to get loose. This forced him in the pits, putting an end to an already difficult race.
Michael Herck: “This point is very important for our mood, it finally gives the team some reward for all the job they did until now. The car felt great and was very easy on the tyres, so I could really control the race and take all the chances that were coming. With just one lap more I would have finished 5th ahead of Clos, he was really struggling with tyres, but anyway P6 is ok. The weekend was good also because we did some steps ahead from a technical standpoint and I’m sure that this will help us a lot in the next races”.
Kevin Ceccon: “Starting from the back in Race 2, when you don’t even have the pit-stop to help in a recovery, the only thing you can do is try as hard as you can at the start. Yesterday it worked and I made up nine places, today it didn’t, it’s racing. It was a good weekend anyway, my aim in GP2 is building an experience and from this side it’s been a very useful three days.
